DarkBeam Breach - Malicious access or Security Research only?

I saw on the news that DarkBeam has been breached with supposedly plaintext email/password combinations. Was this done only by a security company and reported or has a malicious actor also accessed this data? If so, where might we be able to find it?

Seems to me it was a "research" company who in all likelihood, alerted the vendor to close the gaps before more suspicious types could access it Smile  it.
